Knowing God as Abba

By Josh Hunt

How many of you know that God has longings? Shocker? Well, how about this… How many of you know that God has longings for you?! Well, he does. He desires you, you are his world, his dream, and he wants you to know it. Knowing it doesn’t blossom in the intellectual realm, knowing it starts in the experiential realm; ‘and to know this love that surpasses understanding’ (Eph. 3:19 – Emphasis mine). In order for you to know his reality, namely God’s intense love for you, then you need to accept God’s invitation to receive from him in relationship. God longs for you to know him intimately, because as you receive his love and kisses you start believing in his love, and as you start to believe in his love you can receive more! It’s all about knowing and enjoying Daddy God. What’s more, it is that knowing his love is what will cause you to manifest God’s power and heavenly influence in your life!

So, God longs for you to know him intimately! To snuggle in his love, to be confident! To live life loved. What more is there? All the goodies, all the fruit, all the quality good works are stored in knowing God loves you! But this all starts with DADDY (Note: when I use DADDY in capital letters I am referring to the concept of knowing God as Daddy)! It is this revelation, knowing God as Daddy, which will cause manifestation; ‘For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed’ (Rom. 8:19). This verse speaks of the manifestation of God’s people so that the physical world can be freed from corruption; notice how God’s people are referred to, as children. It is God’s people being revealed and manifested as children or sons (KJV) which will free creation. And, this revealing doesn’t have to wait until Jesus physically returns; we can manifest and free the earth now (Eph. 3:19-20, Rev. 5:10)! All you need is a revelation of DADDY!

This revelation is indeed of primary focus in the New Testament. It is the revelation that Jesus advertised on earth (Matt. 6:9) and then provides in salvation! God is Daddy God! God is your Daddy God. Are you testifying the same as the Spirit?

‘The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.’ – Romans 8:15-16

The Holy Spirit testifies to our spirit that we God’s children! The Spirit testifies this truth to us every day, he longs for us to know it! However, even though the Holy Spirit testifies this truth to every believer, not every believer is enjoying knowing this truth and the benefits it provides. Why? Because we need to echo this truth, to shout back “Abba, Father”, “Yes, God you are my Daddy”, “Daddy, you love me”! The first step to enjoying DADDY is believing and testifying what the Spirit testifies in our spirits! God is eternally your loving Papa – receive it! Believe that he loves you and will never, ever leave you. Believe that you are safe, that NOTHING can ever separate you from Papa’s love.

‘What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?’ – Romans 8:31-35 (emphasis mine)

Paul’s point here is, “God loves you”! Paul is identifying the great love of our Abba (same chapter, verse 16), who is FOR us, who has richly supplied us, who has delivered us from condemnation, and whose love is so transcendent that absolutely NOTHING could ever get in its path! We need to get this. More than that, we need to believe this! We must see God as our Abba who will always put us first. YOU must see God as your Abba, as your Papa, who will always put you first. God has always put you first, you are his priority. This was both revealed and demonstrated on the cross; the cross was for you, Jesus died as you for you. The cross was all about removing sin and joining us with the Godhead! Galatians 4 beautifully reveals Jesus’ divine mission and our corresponding sonship;

‘What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world. But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.’ – Galatians 4:1-7

Paul is saying that before Jesus we were like slaves! Under law, enslaved by sin; told to be good, empowered to be bad. But God sent Jesus to; 1) Preach law and show humanity the impossibility of being righteous without the Spirit, 2) Redeem us from law by dying as us and exiting that system, 3) Provide a way for us to be free from sin, to be crucified with Christ, 4) to join us to the Father, and 5) to give us our inheritance; to both restore what was stolen, and to richly endower us with all that God IS and HAS! God put us first in making us heirs. You are not a slave, you are a child!

Are you living as a son? As a child? Are you enjoying the benefits provided to you by paternity? It doesn’t, contrary to popular opinion, start with responsibility. I once heard a preacher say that all believers are children, but not all believers are sons. This thinking concluded on the lines of: God doesn’t give the estate to children that aren’t proving themselves equipped. The problem with this thinking is that it is not biblical. Ha! The bible doesn’t make this distinction. Completely the opposite actually, sonship, our status as heirs, our blessing, and every other promise is established by paternity, not performance! “So, if responsibility and performance won’t earn my way to enjoying the benefits of the estate, what will?”. Well, salvation is received by grace through faith, right? (Eph. 2:8). And, just as we received Christ we are continue to live in him, right? (Col. 2:6). And, the flavor of faith is rest? (Heb. 4:11, 11:6). And, faith works through love? (Gal. 5:6). Then the only conclusion is to receive by grace through faith, keep receiving by grace through faith, rest in the finished work of Jesus, and keep receiving God’s love! Simple! Living as a son starts with these things. In fact, it ends with these things. It is this simple from start to finish (Rom. 1:17). Living as a son starts with personalizing God’s love, knowing him as Abba, as Daddy!

Rest in Papa’s love! Believe the extent to which he is in love with you! God feels in love with you, you are his favourite. Glory in being God’s baby! His love, his masterpiece. Live as though his opinion of you is the only one that matters, isn’t it? Take a leaf out of Jesus’ book. Jesus only did what he saw his Father doing (John 15:19), he didn’t live from responsibility; he lived from the reflection of Papa. He lived and let his Daddy do the work (John 14:10). So, just rest. Be aware of your Abba in you, around you, holding you, kissing you. Don’t entertain the seduction of living from responsibility. No, live from being loved by your heavenly Daddy. Take an early retirement from stress and trying, and glory from DADDY. Glory in the fact that you’re on God’s knee receiving his love, adoration, and kisses.
