Don’t Stress, Rest!
‘Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.’ (KJV)
Stress is often subtle; people don’t always recognize that they are battling with its symptoms, weighed down by pressure. However, this is not the portion of a child of God. No way! Although, in the systems of this world there is plenty of opportunity and reason for stress, we can reign above it! We can enjoy the love of our Papa and live free from fear and stress!
This is why the Bible encourages us to be anxious about nothing; “Be careful for nothing” (KJV), because it is the portion of the believer to live stress free. The Bible wouldn’t encourage it if it weren’t possible. No, there is real potential to live everyday stress free! And instead of stressing, we can rest. This is what the Bible encourages us to do instead of being anxious; “but in every thing by prayer and supplication.’” (KJV). This verse is simply talking about consciousness; i.e. instead of being anxious, we get to be, when we like, aware of God and the good things in our inheritance. Prayer is the Greek word proseuchē, and petition is the Greek word deēsis, and both simply refer to being aware of and enjoying God. I don’t believe Philippians 4:6 refers to us asking God for things he has already provided; God has already given us every blessing we need (see Eph. 1:3, 2 Pet. 1:3). Philippians 4:6 is talking about how we can, instead of worrying, focus on and enjoy Jesus. And when we do this we can be sure that our needs have been met by Christ’s Finished Work. This is why Paul adds, “with thanksgiving”, because it is already a reality. Paul then adds, “let your requests be made known unto God” (KJV); here we see the direction of our consciousness – God. Instead of worrying, we get to be conscious of God (prayer and petition) and then be thankful (because we have the answer)!
This is the antidote to stressful living! Why don’t you try it? Instead of stressing, why not rest? Instead of being caught up in the art of worrying, why not enjoy Jesus and fill your mind of all the wonderful things in your inheritance? Now, we aren’t to make this into a work; some people replace worrying with trying to be prayerful. The reality is so much better. We get to enjoy faith, to enjoy our union with the Godhead, when we want to, led by the Spirit, and as we do we will see faith expressing itself and the power of God made manifest!
