The Helmet of Salvation

Ephesians 6:17

‘Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:’ (KJV)

Some people think of the armour of God in Ephesians 6 as a work which they must do in order to live a good Christian life and see good results. Ephesians 6:10 declares, though, that the armour of God is not about what you do, but it is all about what Christ has already done for us. It is not standing strong in our own strength, but being ‘strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might’. (KJV) What exactly does it mean to be strong in the power of God’s might? – Ephesians 1:19-20 answers this perfectly, in stating that ‘…his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms’. (NIV) Simply put: being strong in the power of God’s Might is all about knowing, resting upon, and abiding in the great victory we have in Christ. It isn’t about standing firm in our own efforts to gain victory, it is standing firm in our already established victory in Christ, and seeing this victory made manifest in every area of our life by the power of the Holy Spirit, as we simply rest in the spiritual truths of the Gospel. We are seated in heavenly places, in perfect, full union with the risen Christ! 1 John 4:17 exclaims ‘as He [the risen Christ] is, so are we in this world’! (KJV)

This brings us on to the helmet of Salvation. The helmet of Salvation refers to a mind-set that embraces and sets itself upon the vast Salvation we have in Christ.  What is particularly beautiful is that the Greek word used for Salvation in this Scripture is much more detailed than our English word for salvation. It is the word ‘soteria’ which speaks not only of eternal life, but of ‘deliverance’ (from mental disturbance, fears, enemies, dis-ease, disease, and all evil), ‘preservation’ (being preserved ‘in’ the risen Christ in the here and now, sharing in all that He is and has, having heaven’s quality of life), and ‘safety’ (knowing we are so secure that nothing can threaten or intimidate us, because Christ is the Victorious One in us).

To put on the helmet of Salvation means that we allow the finished work of Jesus to protect our mind from the lies, accusations, and disturbances of the enemy. We set our mind on the things of the Spirit, knowing that the result of this is always ‘life and peace’ (Romans 8:6). This is so exciting to grasp, because God desires that our lives are filled with joy and wonder as we grow in understanding and believing the magnitude of this Good News (1 Peter 1:8). Right believing produces right emotions in our lives, and rids us of toxic, unhealthy emotions and thus unhealthy addictions too. As we put on the helmet of Salvation, we recognise that we are not trying to gain victory in our lives, we are already victorious, and will see this blessing of the Lord manifest. Wherever we go, whatever we do, when we are wearing the helmet of Salvation we will be ‘the head and not the tail, above and not beneath’ (Deuteronomy 28:13). We are not trying to achieve the helmet of Salvation, either, as it was a free gift of Christ, one that we can rest in and enjoy daily. Abide in the good news today and know that you have the mind of Christ, this helmet of Salvation! (1 Corinthians 2:16).

Good from Our Good Father

Ephesians 1:2

‘Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.’ (KJV)

When it comes to God and his goodness many subconsciously believe that there is a different dictionary to be referenced, a ‘divine’ definition of goodness to be used. But God’s goodness isn’t bizarre; it’s not strange to us. He is good. He is good to us; he wants you to be convinced of his goodness. In ways we can understand, in ways that will bless your heart! Maybe you have lost hope in God’s goodness, or maybe you have watered down the unlimited-ness, the outrageousness of God’s goodness? Well, as you turn to Holy Spirit you will inevitably find yourself hoping and believing in the goodness of the Godhead – the goodness which was revealed in Jesus and through his finished work, the goodness that God desires for you to see manifest in your life!

God is incredible good and we can see that through our great Salvation; we can see God’s goodness in this: Jesus is Lord. Jesus’ Lordship isn’t something that we create when we believe in his grace – Jesus is Lord of the cosmos. He fought, won – conquered. His Kingdom is inaugurated. And, guess what? His Lordship, his Kingdom is one correlated with unquestionable goodness! The Lordship of Jesus testifies to the goodness of God, and as you embrace your inheritance and the Kingdom of King Jesus you will unquestionably testify to the reality that God is good and that from him came grace and peace!

Only good comes from God. God is good. This is far more than just Sunday school talk – although Jesus did say that the Kingdom of God belongs to the innocence, imagination, and belief of little children – this is a huge, massive foundation of all theology. So today, believe that God is a good God. Then, go further and believe that this good God is your loving Papa, and that he longs for you to see his manifest goodness and enjoy his gift-giving skills and kindness in your life! Proclaim the Lordship of Jesus, and that his Kingdom is one of grace and glory – proclaim that you will see the exuberant goodness of God ‘in the land of the living.’ (See Psalm 27:13 KJV)

Experiencing the Union-Reality

Ephesians 1:17

‘That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him’ (KJV)

Relationship with God is far more than a religious idea designed to make obeying rules easier, relationship with the Godhead is indeed an eternal reality, brought into existence through Jesus Christ, and inaugurated in our spirits by the Holy Spirit! Union with the Trinity is real; the implications of this New Covenant, of our inclusion into the Coven of the Trinity, are real and incredible – in terms of the benefits afforded us, our eternal security, and the joy and peace we can know daily in knowing Jesus!

The factual, mystical reality of Union with the Godhead is one of the main reasons why I find it hard to not believe in prosperity, I mean just consider: God is rich, I mean like truly rich, magnificent and majestic, with all glory and honour, and the truth of Jesus tells me that everything that God is and has has been given (as a free gift) to me (and you) in Christ! Certainly every blessing heaven has to offer has been given (See Eph. 1:3)! And, the Bible is clear that we can see and experience these Spiritual, new creation realities! We can know these truths as manifest and tangible like we can know Jesus!

The first step in order to experiencing your union the Godhead and all of those fantastic benefits included is to know what you have and what’s included! Now, often this starts on an intellectual level, but the Holy Spirit desires for you to receive supernatural revelation concerning your ‘knowledge of him’. When you know (by revelation) what you have and what you’re included in, you can know (experientially enjoy) your Union and its benefits and blessings! I like the way the NIV renders Ephesians 1:17, it says: ‘I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.’ You see, the Father of glory is infinitely rich, and he has made you rich (See John 17:22, Philippians 4:19), and as you know this truth, as you allow Holy Spirit to minister and love you into enjoying this truth, you will know (experientially) the Truth and his provision and prosperity!

Locate Yourself Correctly

By Josh Hunt

6The gospel is the greatest message in the Cosmos! What God has done in Christ has ensured our happiness for all time! Are you enjoying the reality Jesus came to give you? Well, as I have heard Joseph Prince say – paraphrased – ‘there’s nothing wrong with the message, and there’s nothing wrong with you.’ Often when preachers assert the validity of the message they preach they blame their listener; [read in angry preacher voice] “there’s nothing wrong with Jesus, there’s nothing wrong with the Word, so the problem is with you!”

But there is nothing wrong with you, in-fact, Jesus has made you right! The message and reality of the gospel is true. There’s nothing wrong with it, and there’s nothing wrong with you! But allow me to ask you, are you enjoying it? Are you enjoying the glorious news of the5 New Covenant? Enjoying is imperative for, well, enjoying. Faith enjoying is a glorious way to see and enjoy the spiritual inheritance in the tangible! Are you enjoying? It’s so fun! Life with our Daddy is so exciting! His goodness overwhelming!

So many people are hearing the grace message, yet some are struggling to feel it in their emotions. Some are left saying; “Thank Jesus for the cross! But, where is the joy?” There is a difference between intellectual assent and enjoying and believing the truth. Many are becoming free intellectually, and knowing the benefits to an extent; however, in order to enjoy the full benefit, we must enjoy the reality by faith. It’s possible to learn the truth of new birth in Christ, but still locate ourselves in deadness. Worry, fear, anxiety, depression, can be all signaling signs that we may be, at times, locating ourselves incorrectly. As Joseph Prince says; ‘right believing produces right living.’ The same is true; wrong believing produces wrong emotions.

Don’t ‘settle’ in the natural. Don’t be deceived into thinking and believing that a contradiction, whether an emotion or circumstance, can dictate the level of glory you can experience! Didn’t anyone tell you that you have been joined to Christ? Mortality was swallowed up by immortality! Your life is supernatural! You are supernatural! One with deity, Married to Majesty! And, don’t try to ‘achieve’ in the supernatural. Don’t be tricked into thinking and believing that you have got to build a relationship with God in order to enjoy the gospel. Some people are so worn out through trying to attain happiness and joy through prayer, fasting, or ‘abiding’. No, didn’t anyone tell you that you are joined to Christ, Married to Majesty?! Don’t ‘settle’ in the natural, and don’t try to ‘achieve’ in the supernatural. Instead, ‘settle’ into the arms of Daddy God, and rest in what Jesus has 7‘achieved’ for you! In other words, the key is to enjoy the gospel by faith!

You are not ordinary, so stop locating yourself in the ordinary! You are not a victim to your circumstance. It is not fitting for the wonderful (you), to locate themselves anywhere but heavenly realms. You may have spent your whole life locating yourself in the natural, believing you are less than who God says you are, but today, you can relocate! Maybe you’re struggling with negative circumstances? You have options you may not know about!

It will help you in locating yourself correctly if you understand what grandeur you have been plugged into! You’ve got a great inheritance:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3 KJV)

Union with the King of the Universe has its benefits; you are blessed, with every blessing God has! The Christian life is not a process of one becoming blessed, or receiving spiritual treasures. The Christian life starts with unequivocal wealth and blessing! The phrase “who has blessed” is one Greek word, eulogeō, meaning to ‘invoke a benediction upon’. In Christ, God has pronounced every pleasing blessing heaven has to offer on you! You have a great inheritance. Also, just because it says “spiritual blessing”, doesn’t mean that the 8blessings aren’t those that can translate to tangible realities. No, “spiritual” is telling us where these blessings are located. The treasure chest is in the spiritual realm.

You’ve also got a great identity:

“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will” (Ephesians 1:4-5 KJV)

You are something very special! The Spirit longs for you to know your royal identity, to see yourself as you are, located in Christ. These verses reveal so much about the believers great identity; 1) We are holy (hagios = “pure”, “saint”, free from sin, made holy at the core of being). 2) We are blameless (amōmos = “faultless”, “unblamable”, united to Jesus therefore forgiven and unpunishable). 3) We are before him (katenōpion = “directly in front of: before (the presence of)”, the NIV says “in his sight”, however, this isn’t just a Jesus-goggle thing, God doesn’t just see us as holy and blameless even though we’re really not. No, he has made us to be holy and blameless and seated us on his lap, we are before him, in his presence continually.) We are also, as Ephesians 1:4-5 goes on to say, “adopted as his sons” – You are declared to be God’s baby and given spiritual life and immortality!

And you’ve got great power:

“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power” (Ephesians 1:18-19 KJV)

Paul doesn’t pray that the mighty Spirit of God would make us weak vessels strong. No! Paul prays for the eyes of our hearts to be enlightened – enlightened to know that we have a great power on the inside of us. Enlightened to know that we are powerful, sharers of 9God’s great omnipotence! My goodness the believer is powerful. You are packing so much glory and power. If you realized just how powerful you actually are you would walk with such confidence! Agree with God. The Old Testament exhorts the weak to say that they are strong (Joel 3:10), but under the New Covenant God has made you strong – strong with his incomparable power and strength.

So, you have a great inheritance, a great identity, and a great power. But, are you locating yourself in the great? Are you enjoying truth? Right now, right here, where are you locating yourself? You see, even if you aren’t locating yourself in the gospel reality, it will still be true, you will still have a great inheritance, a great identity, and a great power, but you won’t be able to enjoy it to its fullness. You are designed, however, to experience heaven on earth. You will only be at home when you locate yourself in heavenly places. And, through enjoying and locating yourself in heavenly places you will make your home like heaven!

Every one of us has a built in GPS system. We wake up in a morning and often allow our GPS to locate us in the natural, in our circumstances, in our wrong beliefs. Sometimes people live in this negative auto-pilot; some continue to allow themselves to locate themselves in the natural – this then produces negative feelings and emotions, a stability that is built on an unstable foundation. However, when we start to realize the other realm, the heavenly realm, we allow ourselves to locate ourselve10s in the heavenly realms. When we locate ourselves in the gospel reality, in Christ, we see the power and glory of God manifest in our outward lives, bringing the full force of our inheritance with it. We see heaven on earth! So, locate yourself correctly! Start to enjoy faith. Live your life with an enthusiastic awareness of the kiss of heaven. Locate yourself in heavenly places. Locate yourself in the gospel reality!

Grace Was No Accident

Ephesians 1:7-8

‘…in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding’.

Some people think that grace was a lucky accident! Some people believe as though the Almighty didn’t orchestrate the new covenant into existence through the finished work of Jesus with the intent of us living in this new way! This mindset can be born from various things; though, often it is born from a inferiority complex, combined with a theological cocktail of law and grace, along with a ‘I can’t believe that God is this good’ expectation! However, whatever the reason, the results are the same and are tragic; namely, it leaves believers shelving grace, referring it to the ‘low points’, and then living life by their own resources.

The new covenant though, is about us living the Jesus life, which we received by grace, through faith. Every time we water down the grace of God we are in effect saying; ‘I don’t need (or maybe, deserve?) to live under the new covenant. This is a shame because grace (God’s unmerited favour and love-gift to us) has provided such a sufficient Salvation. God wants all to know that his grace can not be worn-out, it can not be sunk, nor over used! Grace is not just for ‘low points’, no, grace is the native air we thrive in!

So, let’s receive the abundant provision of Daddy’s grace! Let’s drink deep and eat our fill, and when we think we have eaten enough, or our ‘fair share’, let’s eat some more! Because those who reign in life are those who receive! Now, know that grace was not an accident! The Almighty delights in us knowing and believing in the goodies of the new covenant, without enduring the drudgery of the old covenant! So, enjoy God’s unmerited favour on your life! Enjoy every aspect of your inheritance!
